As far as I know, it's ethnic and it's also religious -- Islamic persecution of Christians, basically.

The media doesn't report this persecution, of course -- but you can bet the ranch that they would report it if it were the Christians persecuting the Muslims.

That's what every televangelist I've heard speak on the topic says, lol. But it couldn't be further from the truth.

The problems in Darfur are due to tribal (not even racial) tensions. Militants who are referred to as the Janjaweed are taking over and attempting to eliminate what they have in mind as their enemy. They don't care who they kill (man, woman, child, Muslim, Christian, Arab, African), and they don't care about the reprocussions of their actions because frankly they haven't even been held responsible for ther actions. Much like the Lord's Resistance Army in Uganda and parts of Sudan: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lord's_Resistance_Army The sad thing is that the media and the government choose which crises to pay attention to based on the benefits they will recieve. IE if there are none they don't bother. The only reason I can see that Darfur is an issue now is that people are starting to stir and speak up and wonder what's going on. Uganda is ignored because a) nobody's going to benefit from doing anything and b) since Muslims aren't involved, it won't make many headlines (bad Muslims are a big hit these days) and therefore wouldn't be worth the time, money and effort put into it..

BBC has alot of information on the crisis.

Over the past twenty years, desertification in western Sudan had increasingly pitted historically nomadic Arab tribes in competition for water and arable land with the so-called "black African" tribes of Dafur. The ruling elite in Khartoum used this underlying tension to its advantage when it hired militias from the ethnic Arab tribes to crush rebellious "black African" militias in Darfur.

Even today, as the UN plans for a possible peacekeeping force in Darfur, the scarcity of water sources in western Sudan presents a huge logistical problem. If the force ever gets off the ground, water must either be imported, or else a number of water bores must be drilled to sustain the peacekeepers.

Dear Dio...
I appreciate your seek for knowledge about that misirable world.... Me too , I was searching about that issue and got the following amazing results::" aslo after watching the Flying Dr." Documenatry film:::::

1- The true cause of that war , is to keep a status of insecurity and instability to stop Oil-extracting process in Sudan , as it has a great Oil reserve not yet extracted due to wars...

2- The 2nd propable cause is to deprive the Arab nation from a Large area of soil that is HIGHLY fit for agriculture ... so they stay depending on us in importing their food....

3-The 3rd -strange- cause is to MARKET our weapons...
I know it's hard to believe BUT is the truth... Some war traders get benifit through selling weapons to warriors in Sudan and Somalia..
By the way , Somalia has a Great DIAMOND reserve....Think about it rationally....
