"Jainism is an offshoot of Buddhism"
To my knowledge Jainism is not an offshoot. Mahavir (jainism) and Buddha were contempories but Jainism existed a long time before the last Jina (mahavir).

I am not saying Buddhism is an offshoot either. They are distinct religions.

Reportbot is reported for nailing it on the head. LOL Look at it this way: You've got a lot of people who cafeteria pick whatever works for them from various religions, and I suppose that if that's what works for you you could do that, but Buddhism itself teaches you how to subdue clinging to many things and how to subdue aversion, Jainism, while very cool in it's own right, is slightly different.

Many prominent lamas believe that if you mix anything into Buddhism you will get no result, at best, or a bad result. Other teachers say "pish-posh". I can't tell you what to believe and think. You must study on your own and come to your own logical conclusions.

It's been a long time since World Religion, but I think Jainism is an offshoot of Buddhism...

Buddhism is more of a philosophy than a true religion. There are Buddhist Christians, so I can only assume that Buddhist Jains are possible (I don't know of any, but I'm sure it's possible)
