It's always inappropriate to wear a thong or speedo no matter who is there or how good of shape the person is that is wearing it. Nobody wants to see that.

I think its fine so long as the genitals and rear are covered.
It is silly that people are so uncomfortable with human bodies, espcially men's. But these things go in cycles. It used to be the case that nearly every man (say in the 40s or 50s) wore a small square cut speedo type suit.

I'm in Vancouver BC Canada, and people wear them (thongs)all the time at the beach. But speedos..... well... they needed to be outlawed way back.. there should seriously be a law.. because just TMI... and eww... spit! gag!! cough! Yuck!!
The prob is generally the type of guy that WANTS To wear a speedo.... I'm really NOT trying to see someone in either to be honest. But a thong is the lesser of 2 evils LOL.

When you no longer look attractive in it. I am well aware that no one except my husband would want to see my flabby way over weight back side in a thong, so I wear a swim dress. I should also say that when I was a thin size 8, I also didn't think a thong was appropriate for me and my modest taste, but on other people they, thongs & speedos only bother me if they don't look good in them.

While in some countries it's considered appropriate to sunbathe completely nude, in America we have a nudity taboo. That means we think naked (or semi-naked) bodies are shocking. Nakedness offends our sensibilities.
Wearing nothing or next to nothing, as a thong or speedo are considered, is therefore shocking and offensive.
That would make them inappropriate to wear in any public area.

I would say, if you are asking the question, then it probably is inappropriate to wear them at a public beach. That's just my opinion.

As long as the privates are covered there is nothing wrong with thongs and speedos.

When you do not have that perfect body, I do believe that it would be inappropriate to wear such an item. I can picture it in my mind, and it sure would be funny, and being a polite person, it would be hard not to snicker. As for the children seeing someone with skimpy attire, it all in the upbringing. Some don't mind while others do. Our choices I guess.

I think it would depend on the beach and what is considered the 'norm' for that particular beach. Nothing wrong with either attire as far as I'm concerned.
