If you have a standard flute, it is a "C" instrument - which means you read music in the key of C, when other instruments in the orchestra or band may read music in B-flat, or E-flat ...

This may or may not be the answer to your question. If you have what you think may be an unusual flute, it may play in another key.

If you know how you would finger a C on your flute, play the C, and have someone play a C on a (tuned) piano or other instrument (that plays in C). If you hear a C, it's in C!

If it's a standard silver(-colored) transverse flute, it's probably in C. If it's an Alto Flute (also silver-colored and transverse), it's in G.

If it's a recorder (also called flute) or a whistle, then your options are wide open. All depends on the pitch of the note with all the holes covered. If you blow the lowest note on the instrument, and match that pitch to a piano, that'll tell you the key.

what they're not saying is that you have to play the OPEN note on your flute. That is, you play the note with NO fingers down and find what that pitch is on the piano. That will be the key of the flute.

Compare the pitch with a pianist. When the flute and the piano is matched then that is your key.
