Assuming the extended warranty doesn't cover accidental damage etc, I'll join the "many people" and say no. The reason is something called the "bathtub curve". If you draw a graph of the likelihood of the camera failing against time, it starts high on day one (faulty, or damaged in transit), but as time goes on the chances of it breaking go down. Eventualy the graph flattens out and for quite a while there's not much chance of the camera failing. Time catches up with everything though, things start to wear out and the likelihood of a failure increases. The shape of the graph looks like a bathtub - hence the name. The people who thought up these warranties are well aware that the down part of the graph covers the 1st year (when you're covered by the normal warranty anyway) and the up part starts at about 5 years. They're providing cover for the period when you're least likely to need it!

Many people will say no, but I say yes. You can get a five-year warranty from Mack for 10% of the cost of the camera, so why not do it? These things are actually kind of delicate and five years is a long time...

I have declined extended warranties on lenses, as Nikon lenses have a five year factory warranty anyhow. I did buy one once on a refurbished lens that would have only had a 90 day Nikon warranty, but the warranty only cost about $20.

It truly depends on where you buy the camera/equipment whether you should buy the warranty... For instance Ritz Camera offers and extended service protection (ESP) and it covers over and above the manufacter's warranty... So, if you drop it, it's covered, water damage... IT does not cover theft or fire. However, it can be expensive usually 20% or more the cost of the camera... You can buy 1-5 yrs. I believe you get a discount 10% the more you buy... Although, that might have changed with digital... I would call the store and check...Ritz,Kitz,Wolfe...all same company...They also match price competitiors (not online prices) go from there....
