I don't see any difference whatsoever in manmade diamond or natural. Not like there is much difference in price either. It's a diamond either way--exactly the same.

Now for your question--personally I wouldn't like it. I'm not a 5 carat kinda girl. I would expect before we got to the point of proposing he would know that and not get me something so gawdy. I'd worry that we didn't know each other well enough to get married. I'm quality over quanity so to me it matters more the characteristics of that diamond. For the same price, you could have gotten a 1.25 nearly perfect in cut, clarity, and color.

My best friend says that she would say no b/c she is the frugal type and would be furious that he spent so much money on something that is just going to sit in a jewelry box. You could have bought her a ring for $800 and saved the rest for more useful things like kids.

Now on the other hand, my sister is behind me screaming that she will marry you. She likes to tell guys she has a 3 carat minimum for her hand in marriage. She says 5 is perfect, regardless of 4 cs because size matters.

So thats 3 votes for your poll. 2 say no (for different reasons) and 1 says yes. Guess it depends on your girl.

I actually prefer man made over real diamonds because I think they sparkle more and if they are good quality no one will ever know but you. With cz's you can get a much bigger stone and nicer design than you could a real diamond and they are outrageously expensive. If my fiance had proposed to me with a plastic ring I would have loved it cuz the proposal is what is important, not the ring. I actually decided this time that I wanted a gemstone and fell in love with blue topaz so my engagement ring is a 3 stone, 2 carat of blue topaz and diamond accents. I also have an anniversary ring from my first marriage that is cz's and is 2 3/4 ctw with marquis for the center and baguettes and everyone thinks it is genuine diamonds. To me its not about size, price, cz or diamonds, its about a ring that is beautiful. Congrats.

I personally wouldn't like it.

First of all, because a 5 carat stone is way too pretentious.

Second of all, because the size of the stone would make it obvious that it's fake.

Third of all, she would have to provide an explanation to his friends and family as of why you didn't give her a real diamond, yes, people will be noisey and ask!

EVERYBODY KNOWS that a 5 carat diamond is fake unless you are Eva Longoria or J. Lo. Only them can afford it.

I personally would feel offended, probably take it, but ask you to upgrade it to the real thing later. I wouldn't want to go through the embarassment of having to explain the poor choice of a cheap fiance.

Good luck

I wouldn't wear any diamond that size, real or fake. If people think it's real, they are going to think you're a pretentious snob and you are a target for thieves. If people assume it's fake (which they will unless you live in a $5,000,000 mansion and make $250,000 a year), then it's just tacky. I don't have anything against wearing a fake diamond, but I dont' want everyone to know it's fake!! If he can't afford any ring, tell him you'd prefer a smaller, more realistic looking fake diamond ring.

don't listen to Lioness (she's a biatch and her fiancee is a dumb for spending that much money on someone so materialistic). The ring could be made out of cardboard and it wouldn't matter because your fiancee would still love you.

Here's an article on synthetic gems that might give some more info:

But i agree with those who says that 5 carats is too big. What about 1 carat instead?

A mature woman truly doesn't care about the ring, it's important that the bf chose it, and that's what makes it special. However, size-wise, doesn't matter if it's a diamond, cz or topaz, I personally wouldn't want a stone that large in size.

for the same price as a huge fake ring, he probably could have gotten a small quality ring. the only reason this would bother me as a bride is if I am not a quantity or quality type girl and I would appreciate him knowing that before presenting me with an obnoxiously big fake ring. he obviously wanted to impress you and others with the size and he would rather compromise quality with faking that he bought you a bizillion dollar ring. i wouldn't like it. you'll have to evaluate how you feel on your own. it is different than a man buying you smaller ring than you'd hoped and being shallow about it... this is different... he bought you a HUGE ring that is sure to be noticed and commented on and its fake.

What difference does it make?? Its a diamond right? Why complain?

Personally, if my boyfriend handed over a 5 karat diamond, I would say "How beautiful! OK now, if we go exchange it for a one karat diamond, we'll have a lot of money for the wedding."

I could care less if the diamond is man-made. Five carats is way too big though.

Like your a wanna be.... why 5 carats if it's fake, that's even worst! Just get 1 carat so at least it looks real.
I personally would rather half 1/4 carat real then 5 carats of fake.
