My cat keeps scrtaching/dagging at the carpets around the house, especially the one at the bottom of the stairs. Whats the best way to stop her from doing this?

Try putting a scratching post around the areas that she normally scratches the carpets, this will encourage her to use that instead. We also have little rugs specifically for cats to use that you can buy.

You will never prevent a cat from scratching so don't waste your time with water bottles, spraying your cat, telling it no, locking it in the bathroom, etc. They scratch as a way to shed their claws. Unlike humans who cut their nails, cats shed their claws and scratching helps in this shedding process. What you need is a cat condo - something tall that they can scratch on. They need something stable that won't fall over or move while they use it. Anything hanging on a door knob won't work. The cardboard scratch boxes that lie on the floor are OK only because your cats weight holds down the box. My recommendation is to get a cat condo. Every time you see your cat scratching where it is not suppose to, pick up your cat and carry it to the cat condo and take his paws and "show him" this is where he should scratch. You must be consistent in the beginning if you want your cats to learn this. Believe me it works, I have 3 cats, a 7 foot tall cat condo with many sisal posts on it and they only scratch on their condo. All my furniture and carpeting is in perfect condition because I trained them to do this. Also, please do not declaw your cat . . that's just too cruel. Hope you have success.

Provide her with an appropriate place to scratch (a pad to place on the floor may be better for her than a post). Put treats or catnip on the pad to encourage her to use it.

To keep her from scratching certain spots of the carpet, cover those spots with double-sided tape or plastic mats.

Cats do scratch in order to mark as well as to stretch. It might help if you spray Feliway in the areas where she is scratching. This is a synthetic pheromone that reduces the urge to mark.

One of my cats kept doing that, so I bought a cheap doormat, put it there, and it scratches that instead. I've got 3 scratching posts in the house as well

Get a cat scratch post and everything it scratches the area, move it to the post, scratch it with your nails. AND get the claws clipped monthly. I notice when my cat needs her claws trimmed, she starts scratching other places than her posts, yes posts, she has two.

get two scratch poles--put one either side of your house,it seems to like certain carpets, use a water squirt bottle to spry it when it uses your carpet--they do not like water. If it uses your sides of the bed or furniture use tin foil as they do not like that either.Wrap the foil around the part it is using.good luck hope this is some help to you.

You should buy him/her a scratching post. This will encourage him/her to scratch with the scratching post rather than scratching on the carpet

She doing it to scent her territory. If you can catch her doing it spray her with water out of a pump spray bottle, it wont hurt her but she'll hate it (cause and effect deterrent method).
Or you could try an away spray (buy them from larger pet shops IE pets at home UK) - you put it where they scratch and the smell deters them.
