Cancer is not an automatic death sentence these days. Be positive about the therapies out there, etc. and dont treat them any different than you did before you knew.

As a parent of a son with cancer I can tell you that just hearing that you are sorry is enough. We're all sorry that it happened. But there is really nothing that anyone can possibly do to make you feel better.

Say you're sorry. Give them a hug. If they want to talk about it . . let them and just listen. That's about it.

"Miracles do happen. It's not impossible. This is the point of time when there's no one to call on to for help but God."

Be strong too, the patient needs someone strong beside him. Don't show pity. Talk about happy memories. Make good plans for the future. Accept the truth of cancer, face it. Do all what doctors has to say.

Believe that healing will take place and claim it.

My prayers are with you.

It really depends on who it is. Everyone could stand to hear a "I'm sorry to hear that and I will be hoping the best for you" while letting them take the lead from there. They will tell you as much as they care for you to know. Of course, offering to be available for them would be appropriate if it is a family member or friend.

I am sorry. I can help you find a doctor who specializes in cancer and maybe the cancer will be treated and you will be in remission. I will be here for you.

Say, "Cancer is always serious, but not always tragic." Lots of people get through it. It's no fun, but lots of people survive it.

And say, "Let me know if there's ANYTHING that I can do," and mean it!

If you are sorry, express that to them. Otherwise, don't say anything. If you express your sorrow, follow it with an expression of hope and encouragement.

if it was either my family or friend I would cry.. but thats just me. and if you didn't give them the emotion that they thought would come from you explain to them that you were really shocked and didn't knw what to say.
