The last 1200 calorie fat burning/muscle building diet I used cost me $240 in groceries for one week! I just can't do that. The rest of my family needs to eat too! Thanks in advance!

find daily calorie intake calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours - it optimizes your metabolism)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have protein (lean meat, legumes etc) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min (ideally 45min because the first 20-30min body burns carbs and only then starts burning fat), light weight training (more muscle=faster metabolism)
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, pasta etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

That kind of spending is madness! And to be honest, low calorie diets are harmful. They make you lose weight but also deplete many useful nutrients and resources in your body as it tries to compensate for the imbalance.

My advice - steer clear of those low calorie diets.

The first step in your dieting success is eating lots of fruits and vegetables. I can't stress this enough. Also, you can try some ebooks and guides on the subject.

If you've got another 40 bucks to squeeze out, I strongly advise you to buy "Fat Loss 4 Idiots". It's been a bestselling fitness ebook for a long time and is THE most complete dieting guide in my opinion.

It can be done if u keep a journal! first of all $ 240.00 is way expensive for a weeks budget! keep urself abt 10 to 12 dollars a day! 12* 7 = 84 dollars to 100 dollars should do!

I buy for breakfast Grits (package of 12 or 20) goes for abt 3 weeks ... Celery ... yougurt..... cucumber ..... Cereal Bar.....
Lunch Sandwich materials.... bread.... anykinda meat (like turkey breasts or chicken breasts) and salad... try to make small sandwich and take some salad to go with it (buy ur own salad materials) dinner make some pasta n chicken or fish n rice!! Goodluck

Black beans and rice are inexpensive, low in fat, high in protein, and extremely nutritious. In my opinion, they are also very delicious. It is cheapest to buy dry black beans and soak and cook them. But if you don't have time for that, canned black beans are inexpensive as well: I buy the store brand for 45 cents a can. To dress it up a bit, you can add some diced tomatoes with green chiles (also from a can) and a bit of cumin.

Here's a great site for finding nutrition information about specific foods: http://www.nutritiondata.com/facts-C00001-01c20nl.html Foods are rated on many different scales. I find it incredibly interesting, and it is surely useful to someone who is trying to lower caloric intake but not sacrifice good nutrition.
