As others have said, it is imported. The question is, is yours an official import or an unofficial (parallel) import?

You need to contact Volkswagen UK (see http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/company/faq#contact ), quoting your vehicle's VIN, and ask if they imported the car to the UK.
If they did, the car should have the full UK warranty.
If they did not, you have grounds to sue the supplying dealer if they told you it was an official UK car.

By IMPORT, I assume you mean Gray Market Euro Spec and not one designated for sale in the US. Rare but entirely possible and no way to tell based on the title in most states.

Take the VIN # to a local VW dealer and have them check it out. Only reliable method to tell if it was imported privately and not through VW of America.

Whether or not it is an import makes no difference. The ones from Germany are built better and tighter. The parts should all fit no matter where it is from. Find a different mechanic who can fix things rather than blame the car for something that is totally irrelevant. My Ferrari is an import. It better be, that's what I paid for. It is still an automobile, and you are suppose to be a person who can fix them. If you can't, tell me someone who can and I will take my business there.

Hmm, I thought all Golfs were made in Brazil for USA use starting in 2001? I know the Jetta and Beetle are Mexico. THe Jetta Wagon was German and the Passat German. Look inside the driver's door area, it should say on the body where your car was made. Although it might have been made in Brazil, it would be still considered an "import" since all the mechanical was produced in Europe.

He might be talking about gray-market cars. Gray-market cars are cars that weren't supposed to be imported but were anyway. Example: My family bought an Audi when we lived in Germany. When we moved to the US no one would work on our car because it was gray-market. We bought it with American specs and everything. It's a bunch of BS. The dealer told us it would be fine.
