My son gave his speech therapist a card he signed and some potted flowers. Another suggestion would be a nice candle, a gift certificate (doesnt have to be alot) or a nice box of candy. I would stay away from nick-nacks or plaques. A teacher has many students every year and could not keep all those things. I they would like something they can actually use. You dont have to spend alot of money.

I would give them a gift card. Really it can be for just about anywhere- movies, bookstore, office depot, grocery store, etc. If you don't know your child's teacher well enough to have an idea in mind, then this is a great option. Personalized "Teacher" gifts are really cute, but when you have 20-30 students a year, they stack up pretty quickly. That's why gift cards are great. That way, when teachers are shelling out their own money for all of the activities they put together, it doesn't hurt them quite as much.

Something nice that they can use over the summer break. Gift certificate to movies, spa, restaurant, etc.
If it's a very special teacher, you might want to get a gift together from the whole class. My son's 1st grade teacher had just started teaching at our school this year. It was only her 2nd year teaching altogether. We took a class photo on a field trip & had that printed on a tote bag. Then, during the final class party, we had the kids all sign the bag for her with fabric markers. Now, she'll have a nice memento of one of her first classes, that she can use for years to come.

Gift cards are the perfect present. You don't have to spend too much time on it and it isn't just more collectible clutter that either collects dust or gets thrown out.
Consider a card to a department store or mall cash card--I know that Westcore malls have prefab visa cards that will work ANYWHERE in the entire mall. This gives your child's teacher the option of spending it on self, fam, or classroom.

As a teacher, I loved getting a gift certificate for a manicure or pedicure, that was the best gift ever. Don't get me wrong a photoframe or mug were swell, but those are gifts you have by the dozen, get something then the teacher can pamper and relax herself with after a long school year.

A gift certificate to a book store or a teacher's supply store; a potted plant (not flowers - they don't last long enough) and a nice card, possibly with a picture of your child with the teacher. A candle is not enough, I think.

Well, it really does depend on how old you are, and if you had her all the year round...it depends on who's your teacher and if you were a good class in general.
As a group, we once threw a small class party, got all the class moms to bring a cake, some drinks, it was cool :)
As a personal gift, I wrote a small letter saying I was going to miss her, she really was a cool teacher :)
GOOD LUCK :)

In elementary school, you might be able to give him or her an apple, but some idea in other grades may be:
Gift certificate for Barnes and Noble
One of those engraved name signs with his/her name on it for his/her desk- you can try to look at www.thingsremembered.com. Things Remembered has a lot of other things that might work, that aren't too expensive either.
A nice photo frame themed wtih something he/she likes. For example, if she likes butterflies, get one with butterflies on it. If he likes golf, get a golf themed one.

My mother is a 1st grade teacher. Nick-nacs are a no-no. They end up being regifted or tossed out. Gift card to a local restaurant is great! Bath & Body works stuff is fine, too - as long as the scent is mild.

Please don't overdo this. I've known parents who have gotten together and bought the teacher a mountain bike, expensive jewelery......I really think, a beautiful bunch of flowers, a box of chocolates or a silver frame with a card and a nice message is more than enough
Having just read the other answers, don't under-do it either. A candle? Jeez!
