We now just have to put him in his room whenever we go out, but I would like for him to be able to run around! His name is Sammy!

Sammy needs a crate for when you are gone.

There is a product called a scat mat that is designed for this problem. I believe it was originally designed to keep cats off counters. It's just about the length of a couch. You unroll it, put in a battery, and turn it on. If the dog jumps on the couch it gets a light but still unpleasant electrical shock--sort of like touching a doorknob when you're standing on carpet. You can adjust the level of "correction" but even the strongest level is not severe at all. The scat mat worked immediately for my dogs.

Make sure Sammy has another desirable place to while away his time, like a soft bed.

Get several of the old fashioned inhumane mouse traps, set them, and put them on the couch. When the dog jumps up on the couch, the mouse traps will spring, and hopefully sting your dog, but not injure him. It won't take long for him to decide it's not a good decision to jump up there. Also, give him his own bed. It doesn't have to be fancy. If you have a cushion for it, put an old bath towel on the cushion. Dogs like to scratch around on loose stuff to make their bed. It would help if you slept with the towel for a couple of nites before putting it in his bed. The sleep scent of a person is different than the scent issuing from them during wakeful hours. He will enjoy your scent.

How old is Sammy? Is Sammy allowed on the couch when you're home? Is your home puppy proof? I would rather put a dog in a crate while I'm gone than to take a chance that they might get into something and either hurt or poison them self.

I read all the suggestions so far and they are good, BUT! I have a friend with an adorable Bischon who loves to sit on her most expensive chair. She tried everything to no avail. Finally she just put a big towel on the chair thinking at least she'd protect the fabric. When she came in the room her pup had burrowed under the towel and was on her chair! They have very strong wills!

When you are home keep him on the leash. And whenever he tries to jump on the couch pull his leash down or whatever and give him a firm NO. You cant spoil a dog to much or they do whatever they want. I mean you can spoil your dog with other stuff, but dont let him get away with things you dont want him doing. I know its sad and your scared to say no, but you have to. if you dont want him on ur couch

Try getting one of those plastic runners for your carpet that have the prickly backing to it. Put the plastic floor runner on your couch facing up so that when she jumps on the couch the pricklies have contact with her feet and she'll immediatley jump off the couch and won't try it again.

Whenever we use to leave my dog at my boyfriends parents house, when they would leave his mother would just position the cushions so she couldnt' jump on the couch. It worked because our dog use to sit on our couch but never over there.

there is a couple ideas..
1-get him an electric fence
2-get a special pad that you put on the couch and when he jumps on it he will get a slight shock
3-for my dog we got a pod that you can get from a electric fence company and put it under the couch so he can't even get close to the couch
i suggest the electric fence for outside

Cover the couch with aluminium foil. They hate the feel of that and they eventually stop getting on the couch.
