No, 70% aren't really against the war - here's how that number breaks down under examination -
*some are at a spiritual level where they protest loss of any life without the further realization that it is murder that is wrong but sometimes life must be lost (and always at the end)
*some have not enough sense to understand what is going on and follow what they hear the most (here is where the media bias plays out - Savage's sheeple)
*some are narcissistic or spiritually immature so they think of themselves first and are not be able to understand or make an altruistic sacrifice necessary for the preservation and propagation of life (this is often observed as fear or snobbery)
- personal comment: your chosen name 'erudite' seems to fall into this latter category
*some are just bad - they are knowledgeable of the actual situation and its consequences but remain silent or promote false views - ((these are greedy people who try to / will benefit by exploiting the brave and the fearful))
*some are evil - they manipulate others and believe in the slaughter of innocents to promote their own dogma (these are usually the religious zealots with delusions, not spirituality)
**some, the very worst, are knowledgeable of the actual situation and its consequences, seek their own advantage, manipulate others and, because they are the most dangerous and evil of persons, they seek to destroy the very foundations on which they rose to power (labeling the past as 'bad' and looking for an idealistic future)
Usually these megalomaniacs think can they survive the conflict and rule over the survivors. (would they want to do that?)
- examples of such evil people are scattered throughout history like the idle-rich Russian nobles that brought down the tsar, the idle rich that destroyed France, probably Hitler, and currently people like George Soros and his ilk in Hollywood, many in the media, and (unfortunately) many in politics like Reid, Murtha, Pelosi, Boxer, Feinstein, Clinton,... (see any pattern??)
***
And, I wonder if you can believe it, many of those against the war are fighting in it.
These are not ignorant people, these are true heroes who understand that while war is indeed hell it must be undertaken to protect the weak and the righteous and combat evil on the physical plane. Many of our generals are in this group and feel we should fight without quarter to spare the greatest number of innocent people.
Only because he is famous, Pat Tillman comes to mind as an example. What about those unknown and unsung others who gave up the comfort of safety to meet this need? I salute them and shed tears for the losses yet to be realized.
(BTW, decisions are made before we know the outcome so it is NOT allowed to go back and second guess the decision based on the outcome - and again, Mr. Tillman is a good example - he was brave and knew the possibilities but went anyway)
******finally, ********
my question to you then is where do you fall, what do you believe and why do you believe it? Are you brave enough to examine history objectively and grow to the point where you understand this issue?
Whether or not you believe we should be fighting in the Middle East is immaterial (you cannot now change the past) the question is do you have the will to resolve this question with the best outcome?
If you believe the 'other side' will let you live in peace because you believe they will if you quit (who attacked who?), you are still deluded.

Excuse me but that's not how recruiting offices work. I work for The Veterans of Foreign war and in doing so come across many recruiting officers. Don't worry we still have men and women joining they don't have to beg people to join. They enlist because they know that we are fighting terrorism and protecting our land. So if you think that it is a "recruiting station" maybe you are driving by the wrong building maybe what you are driving by is a gas station and with the prices of gas that's why you don't see long lines. I SUPPORT OUR TROOPS

How many recruiting stations do you visit? And no... 70% of Americans are not against the war... many are against some aspects of how the war is being handled... the libs would love to tear down the war on terror and make it look like a complete failure. Why this is... not really sure... only conclusion... they don't mind terrorists.

Well, if you're in a predominantly liberal area, you'd barely see a single soul at a recruiting station. The military is overwhelmingly predominantly made up of conservatives. You live in a blue part of a blue state, ergo, very few volunteers or sense of duty.

Many people support the war in other ways. Many work as defense contractors, developing and researching new weaponry. Others repair and refurbish equipment.
Not everyone who supports the war fights on the front line.

I've never heard that anybody wants a convensional war with Iran. If anything, it would be a nuclear war. A convensional war would mean that at least a part of the country could be rebuilt. A nuclear war would mean that they should all be killed off.

Your percentage of support is way off--many of us are simply tired of our troops having to fight a PC war and deal with being denigrated by those who claim to "support them" by trying to bring them home before the job is done...
But even if the war was hugely popular, you wouldn't see long lines--there are recruiting offices all over this great nation of ours. Plus people decide to join for many different reasons at different times, and at different times.
Your question simply shows that you have a preconceived (and ill-conceived) notion about support for the war.

Looks like the military is making their quotas so perhaps it's just your area.
Where did you get 70% are against the war figure? Was it a reputable source?
