The name "Malaysia" was adopted in 1963 when the Federation of Malaya (Malay: Persekutuan Tanah Melayu), Singapore, Sabah and Sarawak formed a 14-state federation.[4] Singapore was expelled from the federation in 1965 and subsequently became an independent country.[5]

When Malaya got its independence from Britain, Singapore was included. To appease the Singaporeans, they added "...si..." to the name. Singapore ceceded shortly after anyway and remains independent from Malaysia.
