Picasa from Google is nice - allows cataloging, automatically finds you photos and allows simple editing like cropping, resizing, red-eye fix, and other enhancements.

As in photo editing? Adobe's Photoshop.
If you don't want to spend that kind of money, try googling GIMP, it's a freeware program that's designed to have most of the same features of Photoshop, it just isn't as well designed.

What do you want to do with the photos? Edit. Display? Organize?

For photo editing, Photoshop CS2 is the best on the market right now, but it is not cheap.

I really like Corel products and Photo Impact, but if you are looking for professional material I would go with adobe Photoshop.
