I gave up smoking as of New Year and have managed to stay off the ciggies. I was interested to know, how many of you guys have given up but gone back and how soon after giving up you went back?

Just to let you guys know, I have no intention of going back, I was simply interested in knowing how many of you were successful. It is so nice to know that alot of you have given up. You are giving me a further incentive. =)
I salute all of you, especially those who went cold turkey..I gave up cold turkey and I know how hard it is! =)

Don't start again PLEASE. I had 7 hour heart surgery. I was in the hospital for 3 weeks, and in rehab for 2 months. I stayed by sisters house for about 4 months till I could get back on my feet.
I smoked for 35 years. I am divorced, and all my children are married. I was extremely lonely. After 2 weeks of being home alone I went out and bought myself cigarettes. Well long story short, I ended up with emphysema, I cannot do anything for myself. Meaning making a bed, walking up more than 4 steps. Bending down to pick something up from the floor. Please don't start again. You will never forgive yourself. My children have to do everything for me. Shopping, putting away the groceries. EVERYTHING
I wake up in the night time 2 or 3 times to use my inhalers, I cannot breath.

Ye dude, ive stopped many times. If you start again ( hopefully you won't) just keep trying to stop you will eventually work out the way that suits you best. i started smoking when i was 14 the 1st time i tried stopping i was 20 and i remember being really dissy and headaches also. The more attempts i made the more i learned how to cope i'm 36 now i've stopped only a week this time and i'm confident this will be the time. Good Luck dude.

I gave up smoking about two weeks ago cold turkey. It has been pretty hard since I have been smoking on and off since I was 11, i'm now 16. My friends are terrible influences also. When I told them I quit and am on a diet the first things they did were deep fry chicken and chain smoke. To help make quiting easier I have begun exercising at least five times a week. It has helped alot with my nicotine cravings and kept me from going out and buying a pack.

My mother has been smoking on and off since she was 18. Then when I was 16 I started to smoke when I was at parties, finally I started to smoke a few times a day. But I never really considered myself a smoker. I just recently found out that I have to get my wisdom teeth removed, and my dentist told me that if I continue to smoke then the blood will be extracted from my gums after I get my wisdom teeth removed! And it's really painful! I'm not sure it's really true, (it's probably my next Yahoo! answers question) but I don't want to take the chance, so I quit cold turkey.

I didn't smoke for 3 months after I came out of my coma in 2001. I started again one night at work and have had a few weeks here and there since, if you have any suggestions other than gum or patches, I'd love to hear them. I have three young sons and want to quit for their health but my stress levels come up with my medical problems and I wrestle my way back and forth on whether or not to buy a pack...always end up with a cig and then another. Before it's over, I'm smoking 5-10 a day again and kicking myself for it every time.

Gave up for four months this year. Back smoking now but hoping to give it a go again soon.
One thing I've learnt trying to give up is that it doesn't matter if its a month or a year, you still got to keep working at it.

well done for quitting!!!!. i quit for a year and a half when the smoking ban was introduced in ireland. Unfortunately, i then went back on them when my dad died, but I seriously intend to quit again. My dad died from cancer so that for me is the best incentive to quit again. He smoked all his (short) life.
