Sometimes when I make the excuse that I'm afraid I'll drop the baby they just go ahead and thrust the baby into my arms anyway, correcting how I hold it. I didn't want to hold it in the first place lol. How do you politely decline to avoid a scenerio like that and avoid offending the new parents?

When declining place your hands behind your back like the baby has the plague! I think they will get the hint!

Just tell them that you don't want to hold their baby. Don't make any excuses, just say no thank you, I don't want to hold your baby. And as an extra measure, clasp your hands behind your back, that way they can't just thrust the baby into your hands. I think it is quite rude of parents when they force someone else to hold their baby when they've stated a negative to the question.

Cough into your hands, or pretend you have a cold or just say you are just getting over the flu and you don't want to infect the baby.
Or, tell them your hands are dirty, and you don't want to give anything to the baby that way either. Usually works for me.

"No thanks, I'm not good with babies." If they then still try and thrust it into your arms, just take a step backwards (provided the baby isn't in any danger if you do so, ie, the parents still have hold of it).

Just tell them you are not comfortable holding babies and are not sure of the correct way to do it. If they insist on showing you, just tell them no politely. However, I would advice letting someone show you the proper way.

Tell them you're just starting to get over a nasty case of bronchitis (or some other equally contagious bacterial or viral infection) and you don't want to make the baby sick with your germs.
