Distraction is the best method for his age. Try putting him in front of something he likes (favorite toy, color...), just pick him up and show him pictures around the home. If your at a boiling point, just sit him down, and walk away. Take a breath, and try again.

It'll probably last until he turns three or older, if he sees your husband spank your butt just for giggles, he thinks it's okay to hit. He models after what he sees and hitting is a way of expressing his emotions. He is only 13 months, then put him in the crib and tell him "no hit" animate these words using your hands also. wow, only 13 months and having tantrums..I'm sorry..My little baby girl cries, but doesn't have tantrums yet, My son didn't even have them until he turned 17 months. He might have too much going on in his head, from you talking, the tv noise, the phone, computer might be too much stimulation for him, give him some quiet time and it'll help him calm down, also a lavender pillow or blanket will sooth and relax him.

Take a toy he likes away for 30 seconds when he does this, say the toy toy is in "time out" because he hit. Keep doing this. He will learn to pair the consequence with the hitting and stop the hitting. Do not give in when the crying and screaming intensifies or you will be teaching him that to get his way he just has to get louder. the point is to teach that hitting = consequences he doesn't like. After the initial "burst" he will fall in line more easily. Be string and do this at home where there will be fewer eyes on you both to intensify the discomfort of discipline.

wow.. where did a 13 month old child learn to hit from??? typically they have to learn it from somebody.
BE FIRM!!! NEVER give in to tantrums.. I work in retail, a week ago a 4-5 year old boy came in and lay on the floor crying - his mom asked him what was wrong, he said he wanted to play in the water fountains - so she let him!!! later he threw another fit because he wanted to look at something and she had moved away... again she let him!!! We were DISGUSTED. this woman had clearly trained her kid to throw tantrums.. later when paying for what she was buying he was touching stuff, so my co-worked pointed this out he was going to break something - she picked him up - the little brat HIT HER IN THE FACE!!!... this is how your kid will turn out.
so yes - i know you are trying to fix it now - make sure you do!
NEVER give into tantrums. NEVER tollerate attitude. and if he hits anyone - REMOVE him from the area. Fun time is over!!!! thats exactly it - any bad behavior you must deal with immediately do not talk to him - talking is reward. pick him up. put him in his crib - dont let him out til he settles down.

A 13 month old cannot reason. He doesn't have the vocabulary to express his needs so he uses his hands/fists. Be patient, and redirect the behavior.
A 13 month old does not have an attitude.

As soon as he hits anyone...take him to the "naughty chair" and have him sit there..if he fights that..keep putting him in it until he stays. He should stay in it 1 min. and when his time is up..tell him why he was in the chair. Time out for little ones is hard, but they understand enough to know why they got taken from the situation. Keep strong...and keep at it. Or he will know he can get away with things.

Put him on a chair facing the wall for 2 minutes. If he comes off it, put him back there. After 3 times spank the skin of the bottom 2 spanks and put him back there. Keep repeating this if necessary.

He is such a little guy, just redirect or distract him. Especially don't hit him, that will just reinforce the hitting and send mixed signals. Never hit, it just makes behavior worse and increases hitting when they get frustrated.

He is young but old enough to be corrected,
spare the rod and you'll definitely spoil the child.
Have a pleasant day.
