Yes, you can close the account so that it can no longer be used but, you are still responsible for the balance.
It will look better if you just shred the credit cards and act as though the account is closed until you pay the balance off and then request that the account be closed.
Either way is smart, just do what works for you.

YES YOU CAN!!!!! It may depend on the card company but you can close a credit card so you can't use it, of course you still owe the balance. I have personally done it 3 times with separate card companies

Yes you can! All these people answering "No" are clueless.
What you are actually doing is closing the account to new purchases. There will be no new annual fees assessed either.
But you will still owe the balance, plus interest, and any late fees that might accrue.
