Since you don't know the graduate, a $20 bill in a card, or a gift card to a bookstore would be nice. The person will also probably need to buy stuff for college life, so a gift card to a place like Walmart would serve that purpose.
Good luck!!

Money inside a card is always appropriate, take it from a graduate herself. Cheesy gifts are just going to get thrown away. $20-$40 will do if you're on a low budget, $50-$100 if you can afford a little more.

Call me silly, but I don't give gifts to people I don't know. And money is hardly ever an appropriate gift in any case: it requires no thought, it's not personal, and it's (quite frankly) insulting.

A gift card, or a Visa gift card. You can't go wrong. I personally don't like to give cash, and you can get gift cards or the reloadabe visa cards anywhere. Walgreens is a good place.
