I would like to buy something like a TIVO but more like a VCR. I don't really trust things where you have to buy it, but also pay a monthly fee. (this is what I hate about cell-phones too ... I have to own it but it is useless to me without the company's continued support!!)

Is there a stand-alone box you can just buy that would record to disc or hard drive that has no monthly subscription needed?

CJ is correct. My DVR through Time Warner Cable costs an extra $6 a month.

Compare that to a $400 stand alone DVR.

It'll take about 5 1/2 years of DVR service through TWC to hit that $400 threshold.

Intstallation is usually free. Plus, you get the ease of programing TV shows throught the cable program guide which is literally as easy as pressing a button. And if anything goes wrong with the rented DVR, the cable company will fix it or replace it for free.

I wasn't thrilled with the idea of giving the cable company any more money either, but since we got it, we can't believe we went so long with out it and can't imagine NOT having it.

It really is worth it.

How about a Media Center PC?

Windows XP Media Center Edition is distinguished from other editions of Windows XP by an exclusive preinstalled application, Media Center, which provides a large-font ("10-foot"), remotely accessible interface for TV viewing on the computer as well as recording and playback, DVD playback, video playback, photo viewing, and music playback.

Unlike competing commercial DVR products, Microsoft does not charge a monthly subscription fee for its Media Center TV guide service.

There are dvr that don't require cable or direct tv or even tivo service.

However, they are expensive so it is often a better deal just to rent from your provider. This would be like renting a cable box.
