The Bible is your best resource book. The old testament explains God naming the Israelites as "His Chosen People". He chose them to display to the world how He could love and direct a particular people that the world might see He is the true God. The Old testament covers time from the beginning to up to 800 years before Christ. They main theme of the Old testament was to point out the coming of the Messiah. ZThe New Testament tells of the Messiah, His arrival, His time on earth, His death and foretells of His coming again. God's Word the Bible is "Truth" and can be trusted not to contradict itself. The words were penned by men chosen of God and God's Spirit directed them what to write. These are not man's words but God's. God and Jesus are one, see the book of John chapter 1 verse 1. "In the beginnig was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God" then see verse14 where it says "and the Word became flesh and dwelt among us" this of course was Christ who came. The Bible tells us "to His own He came but they received Him not".The Jews did not accept Christ as their Messiah as they were and some still are looking for their Messiah to come and reign as a King. This is prophesied in the OT, but it is referring to Christ's 2nd coming when He returns to rule the world for 1000 years, thus the jews would not accept Him when He came as a servant. Their rejection of Him is why the Gentile nations were "grafted on to the Olive branch" and allowed Salvation through faith in Christ. Israel is referred to as the Olive tree in scriture. Hope this is a help in your search.

Israelite is a nationality. The historical religion of the Israelites is Judaism. The record tells us that is was "created" by Abram, who made a covenant with a new god, "Yahweh" and passed it on to his progeny.

Is that what you mean?

Canaanite polytheism, with early influences from Egyptian and Babylonian religions. They had numerous deities, but most notably El, who later became the henotheistic center of their worship, and Astarte/Astoreth, a "Great Goddess" figure.

The first two chapters of Genesis, much talked about on here because of their contradictory creation accounts, reflect the progression of the belief system from polytheism to henotheism. What you're looking at there is a record of oral traditions from two different periods in the evolution of the mythology.

Henotheism (there are many gods, but OUR god is the best one/only one we worship) is the dominant motif in the OT. By NT times, possibly due to the influence of Zoroastrianism, Judaism had become monotheistic.

In case you're interested, I've included two links (wiki and a Yahell group) for Natib Qadish, the modern reconstruction of Canaanite polytheism.

Yahweh is the Elohim of Israel. And also Jesus Christ is LORD. So Jesus is the background of the Israeli religion. Surprise!
