The shot really doesn't hurt. The medicine when injected burns a bit. The real pain comes the day after the shot and your arm will feel like it's bruised for a couple days. Beware however, the shot could cause some people to get a slight fever and maybe some nausea. Not really that big of a deal. You should get one every 5 to 7 years. My daughter just had to have it done before she could go to the Smokey Mountains for a class trip.

Booster shots are needed every 10 years to prevent Tetanus.
The tetanus bacteria can infect many kinds of wounds. Puncture wounds, animal bites, wounds from splinters and projectiles can all cause deadly disease.
Tetanus infection is well worth avoiding. It causes…
muscle stiffness (most commonly in the jaw, giving tetanus the term "lock jaw")
difficulty swallowing
restlessness and irritability
stiff neck, arms, or legs
fever, headache, sore throat
Left untreated, tetanus is often fatal. As the disease progresses…
Muscle spasms of the face can create a permanent smile and raised eyebrows.
Spasms of the muscles around the lungs and diaphragm can interfere with breathing.
Convulsions can break bones.

So you don't get tetnis! It is a very serious illiness. And they don't hurt if you put alchol on a cotton ball and massage it.

They are injecting you with the a weak from of what they try to prevent so you build up immunities. It is in case you step on a rusty nail, and don't die.

Tetanus has a more common term. "Lock-Jaw", the symptom of the disease which can paralyze the jaw, affecting a person's eating and drinking abilities. I believe it is one of the diseases you can die from -(but can't remember for sure).
