I agree with the others: Make sure your cat gets plenty of food, water and attention throughout the day.

However, a warning against the others' advice: Do not give in to your cat by feeding or petting her in the middle of the night.

If you respond to her by opening up a fresh can of food or scratching her belly, her behavior will be positively reinforced. It might seem like a quick fix, but the lesson it teachers her? "Wake my owner up in the middle of the night and I will be rewarded with fresh food and attention!"

If you ever hope to break the habit, you should start now.

A few tips to help:
- Feed her fresh food right before heading to bed.
- Dangle a string or toss a ball around for 10 minutes or so in the evening to give the cat attention -- and tire her out!
- Leave out a few (silent) toys to keep her occupied during the night.
- Tuck your limbs under covers when your cat tries to wake you up, to make pawing at you a little less easy.

Your cat wakes you because she wants some quality time with you. Her babies are all awake and playing, so nobody needs to nestle against her and nurse. Everybody is occupied, and she has time to attend to her own needs. Since you are the most important being in her life and she loves you, she misses you, and wants you to give her some nookie and appreciation.

Don't get mad at her. Just give her an ear scratching and tell her she is a good mommy, until she purrs. Then go back to sleep.

If she wants to play, you've got a problem. But I doubt she does -- she has lots of playmates.

I really hope this helps.

I think, like mine, she's hungry for some freshly unsealed food. I get up to spoon some into her bowl. At 4 am, I'd be fidgety from bladder pressure . Sometimes, I sip a little deepsea water and wash my sticky eyes. Then I sleep soundly again until 6.30.

The only time my cat wakes me overnight is if she is out of food or water. Make sure she has plenty of it before you go to bed.
