Why, why oh why do patients insist on turning the wrong way during an exam? I've had patients that turn left when i say to execute a right face. I've had patients when I say put the outside of your leg down, they try to do the opposite. And please tell me this, why do patients come out wearing the gown opening to the front? I mean, I even typed up instructions for the darn things. Please help.

I know what you mean....but the reasons, I dunno. Maybe they are sick, scared, in pain. We have to remember that to us, these are basic instructions....we do this all day long, and have been doing it for years. The patients generally have not.

I have had luck being more specific. Instead of roll on your left side, I say roll away from me (or toward me) on your side. For a lateral chest x-ray, I say turn so you're facing those files, with your left side against the board (chest board). If you are doing a knee, shoulder, hip etc and you need the patient to move on the table to one side or another to center them to the bucky, I say "stay flat on your back, but scoot closer to my side."

As for the gown, we have three armed gowns for most of our exams. They do not open at the front or back, as they wrap around the patient. So I actually unfold the gown and show them how the left arm goes in THIS armhole, the right arm goes in THIS armhole, and the last armhole goes behind you and you put your left arm in it, so that you are covered front and back. Sometimes, they still come out of the dressing room dressed wrong, but usually it works.

I guess what I am saying is you need to spend a little more time and patience, and try to remember that these patients are usually novices! Best wishes to you!

sorry but I do sometimes forget which is my left or right and it is worse as I am getting older and also with any stress I just forget more so. My last few x-rays were very painful. I was weeping a lot even at my age. Nothing was very clear at all. So please just humour us. One does not have an x-ray unless there is a problem. We are not there because we want to be. The gowns are a problem something one is not used to. Most clothes open in the front and I sometimes do not read instructions.

It probably has something to do with them being nervous/ anxious about the exam. Most of your patients will be worried about the outcome of their x-rays. As most x-rays are undertaken as an aid to diagnosis a lot of these folk will have bigger issues on their minds than following your instructions. Also it is fair to say that the public, in general, are not good at following written instructions.

Wow! For the most part, if a person is in need of an x-ray then they are not in good health or they are in pain. A little patience please. Not everybody speaks like : "execute a right face." Just try to be a little more understanding. I know it can make people a bit nervous just to be in that situation, therefore making it hard to concentrate. Hope this helps you to understand a bit more. As for the gown thing.... that is just weird !!!!

Who knows. Many people are just scared and sick and not always thinking right. You'd be surprised at how many people are still not comfortable with their left and right. Heck, I have to think about it once in a while when pressed for a quick response of left vs. right. Give people a break and be a little more patient with your patients.

I thought it bizarre to feel an x-ray, because you're not supposed to, but I have. It feels like a zapping sizzle. Like waking at the beach to the sting of the sun on your skin where you applied the tanning lotion before you snoozed. It only happened once or twice. I wondered if the x-ray settings - if any - were set too high.

paitents mostly are the general public and forgive me for saying this but their not smart. I have always found when dealing with the general public you have to take them by the hand and lead them where you want them to go even if they are grown. I, frankly, don't see how they live.

I would not worry just concetrate on your job the patients have enough to worry about and even if they do not meet your standards you still get paid.~~

Usually, if someone is getting an XRay, they are either sick or injured and not really thinking terribly clearly at the moment.
