The USCG is deployed right now in support of OIF. They are the primary enforcers of trade embargo's. They board and search ships in the persian gulf quite regulary. The USCG is also the expert in port security and I would bet they have PS ratings in the gulf also. The USCG has probably deployed to every theater of conflict since WW2.

My son is in the Coast Guard. He is homeland security. I do not know if any of them deploy to Iraq, but he never has. He likes his job and plans to stay in the Coast Guard until he retires early. He checked out all military options and felt the Coast Guard was the best one. Of course, he went into it before 9-11. I don't know what he would have decided if it were after 9-11 when he enlisted.

Yes, the coast guard can be deployed oversees. If I remember properly more or less all of our mine sweepers are under the control of the coast guard. Some of those mine sweepers are currently deployed in the Persian gulf.

Mine sweepers like all military craft require some maintenance and support personnel so unless the Navy does that for them I would guess that the Coast Guard would send those staff out along with the deployed vessels.

Last but not least. It is my understanding that MOST Coast Guard personnel remain deployed in US waters. Please to NOT believe this is safer. You will be engaged in combat (yes combat) with drug runners, smugglers and other some times heavily armed criminal sorts.

If you fear conflict and military service, and yes the Coast Guard is part of our military, is not for you.

definitely, no provider can promise you that. Any recruiter who flat out tells you which you will no longer installation is mendacity to you and the probabilities of one telling you which you will under no circumstances installation is between slender and none. There are jobs that make it much less probably which you will installation however the only way you are able to assure which you will no longer installation is with the aid of no longer transforming into a member of. The Marines is going to Iraq and Afghanistan each and every of the time and the national shield is going besides. Even some human beings in the Coast shield went to Iraq. in case you replaced right into a Chaplain you does no longer might desire to difficulty approximately killing each and every individual yet you are able to nevertheless installation regardless.

I don't mean to be rude here but why are you joining a service when you don't know what it does? The Coast Guard does just what its name implies: it guards our coasts.
