I wanted to find out more about the Maltese before I answered, so I looked at this http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/maltese.htm
This is what it said about the origin of the dogs,
"This ancient dog was described by the Greek philosopher Theophrastus as belonging to the "Melita" breed, an archaic name for Malta. It was developed in Italy with the addition of miniature spaniel and poodle blood. It was thought that these lively little dogs were first brought to England by Crusaders returning home from the Mediterranean. The breed became particularly popular with women, who often carried them in their sleeves and even to their beds. The dog was not only popular with women though. Publius, the Roman governor of Malta, prized his Maltese enough to commission a portrait of "Issa" and even have poetry written about her. "
The name Issa is pretty. Melita is interesting and I've not heard it before, it could be nice too.

Molly & Lucy are two of the most pawpular names :)
Izzie, Gracie, Chloe, Sophie, Murphy, Daisy, & Lily & Roxie are commonly used as well. Snowball or something referring to white would be cute.
check out Dogster.com, a my space for dogs to get ideas. U can even just look at maltese........
good luck

This is your dog, and you and she will have to live with what ever name you give her so just look at her and see her personality for a start. I have 6 dogs and their names fit them. I took names from history, movies, and ethnic backgrounds. But do your self and your dog a favor, don't call her pookie or some lame name like that. She will be your best friend so pick wisely. P.S I like the name Dusty, since she will be a dust mop, and it works for both sexes. And its cool.

I've heard that Maltese are excellent dogs! I think little dogs require BIG names. How 'bout Gwendelyn or Bianca(which means white) ? Good luck with your new "baby"!

I like Valletta - it's the capital city of Malta. In the 17th century, it was one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, but much of it was destroyed during WWII.
Other place names in Malta that are pretty are Floriana and Fontana.
I'm happy for you and your new puppy!
