Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a form of competition which brings together fighters with varied Martial Arts backgrounds and training to compete in a format that allows the use of not only punches and kicks, but also Wrestling, Grappling, and Jiu Jitsu techniques such as arm bars and leg bars, and choke holds. MMA is an all inclusive sport - no one is ever told they cannot compete because of the style of Martial Art(s)they practice. Fight winners may win either by submission, where the opponent is forced to give up, or by knock out, or by referee stoppage, or by decision.
The best advice that I could give you regarding what you will learn if you study MMA is this: Learn everything you can, because you'll need it. Some of the best lessons you will learn will come when you are forced to submit, as the saying goes: "The more you tap, the more you learn."

Mixed martial arts is a compilation of different principles, aspects, and techniques from various types of fighting and martial arts lumped together under one umbrella. Karate favors the use of the hands and feet for punching, striking and kicking while Ju-Jutsu favors chokes, joint locks, reaps, and such and other fighting arts emphasize still other things. Mixed martial arts takes from each of them what is useful and effective for the purpose of ultimately defeating your opponent. I might add that "taking what is useful" is a Bruce Lee concept that he started with back in the mid 60's.

Mixed Martial Arts usually refers to the modern combination of martial arts styles by people who are not masters in multiple styles. I am busy enough trying to master Isshinryu, personally, and don't have time to do MMA.
MMA can also refer to tournaments where people from one style fight people from another style, but instead of saying which style is better, usually it comes down to who trains harder. The "better man" always wins, as the old Western saying goes.
