Vista on a NEW machine is probably OK, but make sure there are Vista drivers for your Printer, Scanner, Camera, etc. FIRST.

These are what causes most migration problems.

Most people right now hate Vista, various reason like cost, incompatibility issues, and complicated interface. Windows XP is still the best choice, and will be for a few years. If you get Vista, make sure it is at least the Home Premium level, not Home Basic (really has no features).

There are lots of myths and rumors about Vista being really bad and incompatible with lots of things and full of bugs etc., but I have Vista and it is perfectly fine. Vista looks better and makes better use of dual-core CPUs, but it uses much more resources. If you are buying Vista, you have to buy a good processor and at least 2GB of RAM. Vista is compatible with everything I have and I have experienced no bugs so far.

I have had Vista for 2 months now - it is faster, better looking than XP - more reliable and stable - there are some scare stories going around about software not being compatible but I have only found SonyEricsson software won't work - MS Office is fine - anti virus software works fine - firewall works fine - all round it is a step up from XP - much better.

I'd wait another 6 months to a year before upgrading because software companies are still trying to make their programs compatible. So if you get Vista there is a good chance you will not be able to use some programs for a while.
