I saw on telly that when President Putin entered a room the two soldiers on either side of the door saluted, but tilted thier heads away from him, then slowly raised it. What is the custom for this?

It goes back to the Tsar.

Noone could gaze upon the Tsar, so the army shows the look-away as tribute to the olden days, and looks towards him as a way of showing the peoples triumph over their autocrat masters.

It's funny isn't it ? I've noticed the same, it's probably a tradition picked up from the famous "Red army" time...In case you haven't notice, I think Putin's administration grows a sort of nostalgic about them old good days when USSR used to be a "superpower" !
