I'm an honorably discharged Navy LT, currently in the IRR. I was a SWO in the Navy. So I have a lot of the qualifications an equivalent officer in the USCG would have (OOD and EOOW). At any rate, I know you can apply to laterally transfer when you're active, but what about when you're in the IRR? The recruiters in the USCG seem really slow to respond. I'm also interested in the reserves as an officer. The recruiting website for the USCG reserves seems aimed at enlisted though.

The Coast Guard is not currently recruiting Direct Commission Prior-Trained Military Officer applicants. If you would like more information about the DC-PTMO Program, call 1-877-NOW-USCG

So to answer your question:

NO NO NO

You'd think an ex Navy Lt would have been able to find that link himself.

But of course, where would officers be, without us nco's leading then by the nose and telling em where to go.

LOL

I would think the Coast Guard is under the Dept of the Navy. Theoretically, it should be possible as long as there was a hard slot for you to apply. It probably means a lot of additional paperwork for a recruiter which is why they won't do it quickly. Plus, most recruiters are geared toward finding new recruits for enlisted. Your best bet is to talk to the personnel section of a Coast Guard unit and ask them. If the USCG is competitive in the officer ranks, they may be hesitant to accept you since they'll have O-2's internally competing for an O-3 slot.

umm, the USCG is under the perview of the Department of Homeland Secuirty, NOT the Navy.

First question..is the CG even taking OSVETS at this time? Being the smallest military Branch, they tend to have fewer slots open overall.

Second: do they need JOs?

Third: why didn't you take the Bonus for back to back Dept Head tours and stay Navy? hehehehehe

IF possible, i suggest getting into a NJROTC or ROTC instructor, it pays fairly well.
