People tell me that when you get both, the sound is canceled out.

I have Stock speakers (4) with a 60WRMS amp atm.

Should i get decent 6X9's, with a decent two channel amp?

Or should i get a decent sub with a monoblock? I think SPL vs SQ plays a part in this decision, and Ideally i would want a system thats for the most part SQ, but leans toward SPL. maybe a nice mid point.

E: my car doesn't have 6x9s at the moment. Just stock front and rears (if thats makes sense)

It's not true that they "cancel out", but in most cars the 6x9's main function is to provide the bass for the system. If you add a subwoofer then there isn't much need to upgrade the 6x9" speakers, since you'll get all the bass you need from the sub. My advice would be to upgrade your front speakers, leave the rears stock, and add a single subwoofer.

No, if you use a sub for the bass, the 6 x 9 wont be needed for that, but you can use a crossover or if the amp provides it, to select the freq you want to use for the 6 x 9 you can use them as mid bass speakers. You can get a 3 way 6 x 9 speaker which includes 2 extra tweeters, thus creating a better sound quality.

I could not agree more with kaezoo !!! Replace the fronts, that's what gives a good sound field or musical presence, then send the bass to what was designed to do bass a sub-woofer. I'd amplify the fronts and the sub, but not the stock 6X9's

I agree with both but if you do add new 6X9's you can add bass blockers to them so you're getting clean highs. Any stereo shop can help you with this
