Several possibilities exist.
Blocked fuel pick-up in the tank, failing fuel pump, filter or line clogged.
For these, try using fuel/injector cleaner in the gas tank. You apparently already have some problem, so use two bottles with a full tank of gas and then let the level run well down before adding more gas. Then use one bottle for the next fill-up.
When you open the cap, do you get a hiss of air? Is it a mild one or strong? This indicates a partial vacuum inside the tank and could mean the system needs a new valve on the evaporative inlet, which allows air to come in to fill the space as the fuel is used.
Alternatively, especially if you have one of the 70's Fiestas, and you heard a strong hiss, the fuel filler cap should be replaced. If you cannot get a new one the old one may need a bit of work as it has a valve action that allows air to enter, and it gets blocked or rusts over time.
If you have no starvation problem with a full tank of gas, but an increasing problem as the level goes down, look at this area.
The cap was not an uncommon concern on older models. When the cap is blocked you get an ever-increasing vacuum as the fuel level drops and this prevents the pump from moving gas, and causes starvation.
For an immediate fix try this: the cap has an outer cover and an inner section. Drilling a small hole on the inner section will allow air to enter the tank and you should have no more problem.

I own a shop, and I think it could be caused by many things. Trash in the fuel, and/or the tank, worn out lazy fuel pump, hole in the fuel line somewhere, plugged up fuel filter, a faulty fuel pressure regulator, and clogged fuel injectors. A vacuum leak can also do this, as well as a bad engine management computer, or sensors feeding it incorrect information.
Glad to help out, Good Luck!!!

Possibly a stopped fuel line filter.Pay attention to the direction arrow when installing a new one.
Water in the gastank is a possibility. Have you been keeping the gas at a low level? Invest in a fillup.

1. Bad fuel. 2. blockage in fuel tank. 3. Blockage in fuel lines. 4. Blockage in fuel pump or fuel pump seals leaking. 5. Blockage in line from fuel pump up to carburetor. 6. Fuel jets in carburetor blocked or partially blocked. Have a good day.
