Hello everyone, I'll be graduating high school next month in the middle east. I've been living here for 3 years with my parents (in Egypt). I'll graduate with a 70% grade point average (average) and I am very comfused about what I want to major in college. I am so interested in medicine (it's a bachelor's degree here) but here's the problem, there are two different types of colleges here, private and public. In order to be accepted in medicine at the private ones you should have a GPA of 65% but in order to be accepted in the public ones you should have a GPA of 95%. For some reason I feel I don't deserve to be in med school and I won't do well because I couldn't do well in high school. Do you think I'm right? Do you incourage me to apply or not? :) Do you think I'm gonna suck in med school?

I'm sorry, but I would not encourage you to apply for medical school. It's not that you couldn't do the studying or the work. But medicine is a career that requires a committment to a life of studying for the well-being of the patients and to keep the physician out of the courts. You are ending your high school career and you only put in an average effort. It isn't logical that you'll suddenly become the studious type.

That said, you still have time to prove it to yourself that you have what it takes. Take biology and chemistry in your first semester of college. Both are going to be more indepth than what you might have taken in high school. If you can do well taking both together, then do consider pre-med.

I'm a little confused. Do you mean that you intend to stay in Egypt? If you intend to return to the USA then you should return to the USA for college and not do a degree in Egypt. A bachelor's level medical degree cannot be accepted in the USA, so you would not be able to be a doctor here. And you would not be competitive for admittance to a US med school.

If you are going to stay in Egypt then I think you should go ahead with the medical training. They need doctors badly throughout Africa and the Middle East.

The big question is, do YOU want to go to medical school and become a doctor? If you have the desire, the wisdom and strength to succeed, you may someday heal or save a life of someone dear to a family. Don't doubt yourself with looking at scores that could be OR could not be important to your future. Tests are just that, tests. Some days you do well, other days you fall flat. I would suggest you try your best and pursue your dream of being a fine doctor. Good luck!

Being interested in medicine doesn't mean you have to go to med school. There are many other careers in medicine besides being a doctor. If you want something though you have to work for it. How much do you want to work in medicine?
