Roman mythology is largely based on the earlier Greek mythology. The Romans were notorious for taking what they could from other religions of the peoples they conquered and incorporating them into one religion that all could follow at least in part. This was done mostly to keep the people of Rome unified and to keep the newly conquered from feeling completely without their previous society. Hence making them more willing citizens of Rome. Originally Roman mythology was mostly taken from the Greek myths. Later, when Christianity was on the rise, the Romans decided if you can't beat them, join them and Constantine helped organize the first formal Christian churches and doctrine. Again many of the holidays were absorbed in such a way that allowed for previous pagan worships to still be honored to a certain extent. I hope this helps.

Sage is right.
Anyway a Roman mythology did never existed. Romans had theri own gods and goddes, but no tale about them (ie "mythology").
What you name "Roman mythology" is Greek mythology (but gods have latin names)
When Romans get knowledge about Greek gods and mythology, they think they were the same gods, but differently named.
So Roman poets and authors get many hints and themes from Greek mythology, using roman names

Not much. There are a few stories that are original for each one (i.e. Romulus and Remus for roman) but a lot of the stories are the same. The Romans took a lot of Greek literature as their own...so the only difference is the names of the gods.

Not really much of a difference. The Romans took may of the Gods of those they conquered and changed their names. The Romans also ended up taking a Celtic Goddess when they marched Northward, namely Epona. Who became the patron for their mounted soldiers due to Her being the Celtic Goddess of Horses.
