You're probably using an airline that has a hub in Chicago. That means they try to route a lot of their flights through Chicago before they go to their final destination. For example, there might not be a lot of people who want to fly from Denver to Dallas, but there might be some people who want to fly from Denver to New York and others who want to fly from Michigan to Dallas. If they route the planes through another airport, they can fill the planes up to capacity as much as possible.

If you make this trip, you might want to switch to American Airlines, because their hub is in Dallas.
