Yesterday I noticed my rabbit cheek is very swollen....at least I think it is. It's about twice the size as the other one. I don't think he has a problem with his teeth, they are still short. His cheek is pretty hard, it's about the same hardness as the other cheek. Is he ok? Is it normal? Will it go away or should I go to the vet? I couldn't find anything on the internet so I was wondering if someone could tell me anything or where to look? Any vets or rabbit owners out there who can help?

You're getting good advice. It sounds like a abscess. An abscess is basically an infection or spot that has puss in it. If it is an abscess it will need drained and the rabbit given some antibiotic. Normally abscesses around the head are associated with tooth problems, so normally it is a good idea to check the teeth to make sure they are aligned properly.

It's nothing that is life threatening right away, but probably a good idea to take to the vet. The vet can determine better if it is truly an abscess and if so, the correct spot to puncture it in order to drain it. The vet should also be able to pick the correct antibiotic to fight the infection, if it is one.

With abscesses its normally good to have them treated in 1-2 days or so.

Yes you should go to the vet.

It's very likely to be a tooth problem. Rabbit's back teeth are pretty much impossible to see without completely opening up the mouth and extending the cheeks - i.e under sedation. They won't necessarily be long, but they get little spurs on them that are really sharp and cause problems.

This is probably an abscess. It needs to be sorted out asap as, apart from the infection, your rabbit will be finding it very difficult to eat, which is dangerous for a rabbit. If he hasn't eaten much in 12 hours you'll need to find something to syringe feed him with. As I said, get to a vets asap!

Most lkely it is an abcess. As it is on the cheek, your vet should check the teeth to make sure that ithere is no teeth involvement.
The abcess should be lanced if it is ripe and your vet might pack the area with sterile sugar/ honey or antibitics.
Do not delay going to the vet as the abcess can worsen rapidly.

having a lump in your rabbit's cheek is really something... go to a vet for check-up... it may be a bacterial infection...

Thanks
