Criminal law pertains to wrongs against the state. In other words, when laws are broken. The state or federal government goes against an individual or entity. Civil law pertains to personal issues such as divorce, damages in actionable causes, etc. It is an individual or entity against another individual or entity.

Criminal Law is used when a crime has been committed. Civil Law is used in civil cases, such as divorce, or suing someone.

All matters pertaining to money dealing, contracts, compensation & even matters of constitutional writs are classified as Civil Law. Whereas all penal laws prescribing either jail term or fines are known as criminal laws.

Just what it says: CIVIL is between people: LAWSUITS, DISAGREEMENTS, WILLS, LIVING WILLS, CONTESTING WILLS, CHILD SUPPORT, ELDERLY RIGHTS, CICVIL RIGHTS, WOMEN'S RIGHTS, LAND DISPUTES, MONEY DISPUTES AS WHEN SOMEONE DOESN'T PAY YOU FOR WORK YOU DID, ETC.
CRIMINAL: is when people BREAK THE LAW-- robery, rape, murder, grand theft, assault, battery, fraud, etc, OK ???
