I agree. They should be given tokens instead that can only be used to purchase kids clothes or food (not alcohol or fags). And I think that those people who don't actually need it shouldn't claim it either

Well I kind of agree. The custodial parent certainly should be able to prove that the child is well taken care of to whatever level the situation allows but I dont know that there could ever be a system in place to assure that every penny is spent directly on the child nor am I sure that there should be. There are many things that the money could be spent on that would indirectly benefit the child.
I guess my thought is that if the child's current conditions are not in line with what they should be based on the financial situation then it should be looked into. If mom (or dad whoever has custoyd) is spending a lot of money on cigarettes and can afford to wear designer clothes and go out clubbing or to the spa or something like that then maybe she doesn't need quite so much child support and need to take more responsibilty themselves.
On the other hand for the most part the child support amounts are reached by the court considering all the financial factors and in most cases are about right. It bases its findings on what the child needs from each parent to live a healthy normal life.
I think the bottom line is that if you parent a child you are responsible for supporting them.

I do agree to a point. Granted the money shouldnt be spent on anything for the parent or anyone else. But if it a person who has custody and are struggling they should be able to use some of the money to make sure that child has a roof over his head and food. But majority of the money should be spent on the childs needs.. I used to pay child support and I would love to know where and how the money was spent.

Sorry, but I totally disagree. The purpose of child support is so that the child will keep the same lifestyle as before. I am not divorced and have never received child support, but I can see myself buying things like vacuum cleaners, house plants, gifts for friends/cousins birthday parties (the child would be embarrassed to go empty handed), etc.. Then what about internet, cable, electricity bills? The kids use that too.
As long as the kids are not abused and have everything they need, it is the parents decision

I agree. My husbands ex spends hers at the casinos (we know this because she leaves the kids alone all weekend during her trips) and then gets angry when we won't buy the kids the things they need. Like shoes. She actually sends them to us with LISTS of things they need (and just plain old want) that she will not buy them. We pay her quite a bit per month and she makes more than both of us combined and on top of that has no bills because her apartment is subsidized by the govt based on her old salary and no child support. I could go on and on, but my fingers need a break.

its always harder trusting someone to look after ur own child but to trust someone u dont want to be with is worse. we wont ever find out exactly wot the money is used for cause i reckon they would lie anyway. i do think ur child support should be based on a 40 hr week an not on total earnings because a lot of dads do it even harder then when they were with the ex. ill just get personal after this so ill stop b4 i start ranting

I do agree, but a lot of people do spend the money on the children. I know of a lot of people that spend the money on themselves. My father never did pay child support.

If the child is being fed, clothed and has a roof over his head that pretty much proves it to the court and any other interested party including the IRS.

not that i have kids but i know i would never give her the money directly. instead i would pay a bill and buy stuff for the kid, and anything the child needed i would buy.
