I feel that the purpose of such a gift is to show him how highly he was thought of at the company he is leaving and to give him something by which to remember you.
It doesnt have to be practical - I wouldnt suggest a toaster!
I always think that something nice to put on his desk is a nice leaving gift.
As he is going to a musical association maybe something with a musical connection, or else maybe something that represents his current place.
If he likes old cars then you could get him some sort of small replica car - they are always a nice gift.

I was going to ask his likes, but since he must like music, perhaps a good book on one of his musical likes? something about mozart for instance. Is this a private gift? or are others contributing to this gift? depending on the amount to spend should adjust your buying power. hope I helped a little bit.

Take him out for a drink.
Buy him a personal organizer if he don't have one.
Or a nice shirt and tie would be nice as well.
