DVDs will not work or be readable with a CD-ROM, it has to be a DVD CD-ROM.

The optical lens in a CD-ROM and a DVD-ROM don't have the same optical spectrum. CD-Roms have a wide beam, DVD-Roms have a narrow beam. DVD-ROMs will read cds, but CD-ROMs will not read DVDs.

Of course you can't, so just buy and install a DVD player and the corresponding software. It would also play all your CDs.
