It certainly isn't illegal and in my opinion not really unethical. Unprofessional maybe but it depends on the circumstances. If this "parent" was complaining in court that the child support was unfair and/or trying to make excuses why they couldn't pay it and the judge felt that it was fair (which obviously he does or he wouldn't order it) then I could see why he might say such a thing.
While I cant say that ALL child support orders are fair or right I would say that a very large majority of them are. They are calculated based on many conditions. As soon as you become a parent you have a responsibility to support your child and that's the bottom line. I can certainly see some of our local judges say that line, judges do not take kindly to people whining about their judgments.

A "presiding" judge can make any comments he/she wants. It is the responsibility of the "defendant's" attorney to question the ethics or legality of court procedure, whether in a criminal trial or family dispute.

Sure it is. He got his point across loud & clear, didn't he? He's the one making the decision & there are no rules as to what language he will use in rendering the decision. That's pretty mild compared to some things I've heard judges say.

Absolutely! It might be a little rude... but the Court's obligation is to make sure the child is cared for.... NOT that he doesn't hurt the feelings of the deadbeat parent.

Sure it is.
It's a rather strong response but it makes the point that if you're going to parent a child, then you have to take responsibility for it.
Too many dead beat parents doing whatever they can in order to avoid having to look after their children.

It isn't smart, but it is not unethical or illegal. I have heard them say worse things to parents.
Perhaps the truth is he doesn't really care. Perhaps part of the 1/2 of the homeless who have full-time jobs saw the same judge!
