and distance? It seems like I never have the time to talk to any of them and then after a while it seems too late to keep up the relationship.

1. A greeting card once a year with a little note as to what you and your family have been up to the past few months.

2. E-mail (but remember, lots of people are NOT good e-mailers).

3. A post card from where you now live or a place where you are vacationing.

4. An occasional letter or telephone call.

5. If you are ever in the same town, meet someplace for coffee or lunch.

The main thing is that you have to "feel them out" to see if they still want contact and more importantly, how often and intense they want that contact to be. Remember, they have started new lives now that probably include family and new friends. (Sometimes college friends act as temporary "family" during our years at school but out of that environment and time in our lives, these close friendships may very well change or disappear. Don't get me wrong, I know how intense friendships formed during school can be, but there is also a reality check we each have to make.)

Remember too that some people's lives have not always gone the way they would have wanted after school, and they might not want you to know about them, so they become distant from you. From personal experience: Friendships strickly based on college classes, living arrangements and such do not last too long after school. Those connected to college jobs and activities seem to last longer. I have also found that when something either very good or something very bad happens in their lives they contact me again.

Good luck to you. My friends still contact me but I sometimes get the feeling certain ones like their new post-college lives separate from former fellow students - mainly because their lives after school were not that great (in their eyes) and they believe others might judge them. We are ALL human beings with good and bad experiences but somehow, former college guys and gals seem to forget this and expect themselves to be super men and super women.

It's never "too late" to keep up the relationship. If you realize you're slacking, just send an e-mail or make a quick phone call. It doesn't matter how long it's been.

Probably you can create Mail Groups like the one in YAHOOGROUPS for your College friends so that you can keep in touch with them and mail them frequently.
