Generally not great for the engine mainly since sediment and water are heavier than gas and stay at the very bottom of the tank. When you run it on reserve there's a higher probability of sucking this up into the carb or injection system. Most tanks have a screen filter on the reserve pickup but not all of them do.

Running out of gas generally won't cause significant damage but it is dangerous to lose power while riding at any point. To avoid running out of gas, reset your odometer when you fill your tank and watch your miles. If you know your approximate mpg you can anticipate when you need more gas.
Also, if you know you're low on gas you should watch for sputtering or loss of power. If you are a good rider, you should be able to switch to the reserve while coasting without the engine ever dying.

It is more likely to be bad for you as one day the reserve will run out too and you have then to leave an unattended bike or push ~~

Yes its bad to runa bike or car out of gas.
First of all there can be sediment in the tank, and the last bit of gas that goes through can clog a fuel filter.

I've had this happen a few times. The worst thing that can happen is getting ran over while looking for the reserve lever

It doesn't hurt the bike until someone runs into the back of you while your fiddling with the reserve valve. Don't do it.

It's happened to me (several times!), and I don't think it hurt the 'cycle any. I just pull off, use the call box, and wait for the guy from the Auto Club to bring me a half gallon. Very embarrassing.

It's not good for the engine and the carburettor/ fuel injection system.
Avoidable.
