Yes, fishes can hear, but hearing abilities vary among species.

Hearing in fishes involves the sensory chambers of the inner ear. Each chamber is lined with sensory hair cells and contains an otolith (ear stone).

When sound vibrations pass through a fish, the differences in vibrations between the dense otoliths and the sensory hair cells is detected by the auditory nerves.

In some fishes the swim bladder aids in hearing by transmitting vibrations to the inner ear.

This function is enhanced in many freshwater fishes (such as Carp) by the Weberinan ossicles, a series of small bones that connect the front of the swim bladder to the inner ear.

Fish don't actually "hear" the way we humans think of it. The lateral lines along the sides of their bodies sense vibrations in the water. Their nervous system and brain can distinguish different frequencies in these vibrations and some fish instinctively know or have learned the meanings of certain vibrational frequencies. ie: A struggling wounded fish gives off a totally different vibration than a healthy predator just swimming along.

Absolutely. I always feel bad when I accidentally bonk the side of my fish tank when I'm cleaning it. It must sound awful to the fish inside.

Yes they can, Never ever tap or bang on your tank, this can really damage the fish. Sound travels through water much louder than through air, so never bang the glass!

Yes - they actually sense sound in a number of ways, including an inner ear (no opening to the outside of the body), the lateral line (a series of pores along the side of the body that detects vibrations), and the vibration of liquid-filled spaces inside the body against their internal organs.

well, they don't have ears so i would think not. but i'd assume they use vibrations as their way of hearing.
