That's a tough one.I just married the love of my life a month ago. We were dating about 20 years ago and broke up over something stupid. We were apart for 15 years then got back together in 2004. We married on April 20th. what is love it is putting the wants and needs of the other person first, always being open, honest, fair, just and above all loyal. One of the greatest attributes that my husband has is his loyalty. His word is important too. It is truly his bond. He is generous and caring. On of the greatest things about him is the way he treats his mentally handicapped older sister. She has the mentally at 48 of about a 5 year old. He is always patient, never gets frustrated with her, takes her out on pizza dates and watches endless Walt Disney movies with her. He is a biker by the way and I don't mean a "I ride a motorcycle on the weekends" guy he rides a Harley Davidson and we live the lifestyle.
So I also have learned that love is getting to know someone not judging them for their looks. Sometimes if you take time to wash off a rock you will find out you are holding a precious gem in your hand.

Even in the best case scenario - it's not going to feel the same - family members have been there since birth - it takes time and 100% commitment from both parties to develop that in the positive sense between a man and a woman and having kids helps develop that too. But on the negative side - you're going to have challenges in trusting a woman if your mother didn't protect you as a child. You can still have eros love for a woman because you can develop that with anybody and it's very superficial - the family kind of love requires time, 100% commitment and unconditional love. Even if you didn't have that as a child you can develop it now by making the right choices.

There are all different types of love. Companionate love is what you feel for long time friends of either gender, love for your family is unconditional. Even if you don't like them at times, you still love them. Love for your children is different again, I don't have kids but most say that it is the most overwhelming feeling in the world. Love for a partner or spouse is a calm, safe, deep love and altough it may still be very exciting, it differs from lust because lust is generally based on obsession and sexual excitation.

Love is extreme liking with respect, enjoyment of being close, expectations of kindness, some measure of admiration, and wanting to do things for another.

As I search my remebrance of feelings, I can not come up with anything to add to this list of basics.

This definition does not seem to rule out love for more than person, nor love that feels a bit different over time, even from one loved one to the next.
