If you have a shady spot, throw it in the ground. It will go wild. I have some in my backyard that has been there for three years now. I also potted a few sprigs on my back porch last fall and they are now over a foot high and fluffy. Mint is easy to grow. When it rains, the yard smells so nice.

April is the best time of year to start cuttings but they can be started at any time. You'll have more luck rooting it in vermiculite rather than potting mix. Rooting hormone, which can be obtained at a garden center, could help too.

Mint is incredibly hardy; you can pretty much start it any time of year that it's not going to be freezing, and you should have a whole yard-full of mint before you know it!

"Mint is one of those non fussy easy to strike plants that you can take a root cutting of almost year round - as long as you keep it moist, out of harsh sunlight and trim the foliage to 1/3rd of its original size. These steps will prevent it from drying out significantly. You could also spray it with stress guard" and water with a weak seaweed solution as an added insurance.

Mint will literally "grow like a weed" about anyplace, anytime. It likes lots of water and sun.
