Excuse me. Nguyen (Nu Yen) is a Vietnamese name. I do not believe Chang is. Why would anyone pronounce Nguyen Chang, it is a ridiculous assumption. One has nothing to do with the other.

I always thought Nguyen was pronounced something like "Whin". Most Vietnamese also used the pronunciation "New Yen" so as to make it easier for the English speaking Americans (like myself).

As far a Chang, I've always heard it pronounced as "Chang".

So they are two different pronunciations for the two names.

Nguyen is pronounced like New-Yen or Wynn. Chang is pronounced Chang.

The former is Vietnamese...the latter is Chinese.

Learn your History. Start with leaders during the Vietnam War... you will see the first of your names prominently listed.

No...they are also from different cultures...

Nguyen is pronounced New-yen - Vietnamese

Chang - Chinese

If they are in America...Nguyen stays Nguyen and Chang stays Chang.

Several answers have suggested that the pronunciation of the Vietnamese name "Nguyen" would sound like " New-yen".

There is a local Los Angeles television news anchorette with that surname, and when she introduces herself that is what she says. When the name is said quickly it will also occasionally sound like "Wynn".

I agree with the first answer. Chang is a Chinese name and Nguyen is most definitely not Chinese. Not even close, in my opinion.
I have heard, though, that the name Chang can sometimes evovle into Chan or even Tan, depending on the dialect.
