There are several products available which can and will 'help' with the string algae problem, like barley bales and/or barley pellets. The idea is that by adding these to the pond, they will also start to decay in the water, and the resulting natural 'humic acids' will actually oxidize the algae, and help keep it under control.

One new method that we've been hearing more and more about is adding a certain type of clay to the pond water. The first method that i use is to take a stick, put the end in the middle of the area with the string algae. Start twisting the stick and the string algae will wind itself around the stick. A lot of the algae can be removed this way. After getting rid of most of the algae I then use Barley Pads that inhibit the algae from coming back. and destroys the parts that is left. I do not use commercial chemicals in my pond when not needed
