Well, they rationed Gas, Diesel, Fuel oil, Rubber, Nylon,Sugar,Coffee,Steel, and a lot of other things.
Pretty much anything the G.I.'s needed got first priority, and the people back home made do with what was left.

Anything used in the war effort. Think about it. You need gas for tanks, transports, jeeps.... etc. so just about all petrolium products. Food to feed the troops, grain, milk, stuff that could be kept dry and for long periods of time (the milk being powderded or condensed). Metal like you said. Copper being a component of the brass casings for the bullets. Steel, so iron and nickle. Not that there is a huge demand for chemicals, but I imagine the chemicals that go into making gunpowder would be harder to come by... saltpiter, sulfur, etc... Although I am not sure if water was rationed it was probably encouraged that the nation as a whole be a little more frugal with finite natural resources.

During WW2 alot of rationing was going on from all parts of your life . Gas was the biggest part . All metal ( from iron tin copper.... ) was pulled out of every garage attic and basement to be recycled into new war machinces . Meat was also something they had to cut back on . Old clothing was turned into new uniforms and bandages . Anything that could help the war effert was done .

every consumer product was rationed; food, sugar, cloth, cotton, gas, wood, lumber, aluminum, steel, rubber. You name it, it was rationed. and very few people complained because everyone knew the reason for the rationing and knew it wasn't because of Greed, like today's so-called shortages of gasoline which are artificial simply to run up profits.

Gasoline!!! You couldn't travel then for pleasure back then.

No new cars were made during WWII. It ended in 1942 and began again in 1946.

Also food items like sugar, butter etc. were rationed.
